It's about time people got hit with the clue bus.
So we all knew Michael getting on Twitter was going to be insanity. For me personally, it has been rather amazing. But I know he's been getting a lot of crap for his brutal honesty and his penchant for language (neither of which has surprised me or should surprise ANYONE who is a fan of his. I hate to use the 'true fan' statement because it sounds so elitist, but... *shrugs*). He's handled it like the boss he is (not that I would expect any less - his years of doing conventions has proven he can handle crazies).

Then THIS post comes along on Tumblr (and before somebody ELSE jumps on my shit yet again for passive aggressive posting and not handling the post directly, I DID reblog it and respond on Tumblr).

I'm not necessarily angry at what the OP is saying. That is their opinion and they are welcome to have it. But it brings up this whole thing of how some people have been reacting to and treating Michael since he joined Twitter.

Michael is not an idiot. He knew what he was getting into when he finally decided to get on Twitter (I'm sure he'd already seen a lot considering how long Lexa has been on Twitter. This would also explain how he had no NOOB-ness when he started using it!). He's also said in the past that if he ever did get on Twitter, he was going to be brutally honest about shit (I have the video proof...it was at D*C '10). And that's exactly what we've been getting. And it's been excellent because it's not very often you get an actor or actress to be so up front and genuine. The other three original SG-1 actors definitely aren't, at least not to the same degree (and this is not a gripe against them for not being that way, of course). It's refreshing, and as a huge Michael Shanks fan, I'm LOVING every minute of it.

Because hey, we get to see Michael being Michael. Get to see that he is a normal person like all the rest of us (and that he curses to the Olympic medal degree - even puts me to shame, which is a task). And I'm not sorry that it's upsetting some people because they need to get it in their heads that this guy is NOT the character most people adore him for playing. They've lived with the delusion for so long that he is Daniel Jackson (there have been several occasions where I've been around people that have referred to him as DANIEL, rather than Michael) and that he's just as perfect as that character (which is kind of ridiculous anyways because Daniel IS the farthest from perfect a character can get!). Which is fucking absurd. He's human like all the rest of us. It is time for people to step OUT of the fiction world and into reality - where your favorite celebs are allowed to have a sense of humor, curse like a mutherfucker, and call you out on your bullshit, delusional ideas.

It totally was! I had to read over it three times to pick up on the variety of curse words he used in it!

Couldn't agree more. So refreshing to have someone someone so honest on twitter. I've never followed someone who responds and interacts with his fans so much. If people not happy with what he says, then all they need to do is click that unfollow button. Very simple really.

Yep. It is simple as that. He's a genuine guy who knows what he's doing. He gets major props for the way he's taken over Twitter since coming into it a month ago.

I do understand how it can be a little bit of a shock when you realize an actor is just that, an actor. Especially with someone like Michael Shanks. SG-1 started at a time when your favorite celebrities weren't really available to you at the press of a button. The internet wasn't yet was it is now. I mean, towards the end of the show it was, but the late 90s didn't have Facebook and Twitter. You see a person for 10 years and it's hard to think, "No, that isn't them." BUT, people shouldn't be OFFENDED when the actor isn't the character he portrayed. It isn't difficult to stay away if you are offended by profanity.

Honestly, if people have been fans for this long and are involved with Twitter, they should most likely be 'up to date' on how the actors in SG behave. There are con vids and interviews galore out there that show what kind of people these actors are.

And also, they never should think the CHARACTER and the ACTOR are ever the same person. Because one is real and one is fictional. Just because you 'know' a character does NOT mean you're gonna know an actor.

i didn't even see this post, only your tumblr and twitter post and i did wonder about the no noob-ness to twitter that shanks had. i didn't realize lexa had been on twitter for so long. when i first saw him at conventions back in '03 and '04 i loved how he was such a blunt person, nice to fans but still pretty damn real and that was what made me feel like he was a bit more normal and you could not be so damned nervous around an actor like that. because they just acted like a normal fucking human being. there was a spot on some conventions in a certain time period where him and judge weren't getting to relax as themselves because of some b.s. from a "concerned parent". well guess what, don't bring your fucking 9 year old to convention. sorry but i HATE cons where people bring kids and then get so offended about things actors say when they are on their own time and generously go to a convention even if they are paid for it. it's still TIME.

that being said, it's pretty fucking awesome he's gotten on twitter because it's been cool to hear about the new show and hockey shit and just general ramblings. his first online chat from like FOREVER AND EVER ago, he was pretty blunt about shit which made me think if he ever posted on sites and stuff on a normal basis, he'd be pretty brash. he also has turned into quite the twitter whore in a matter of months lol and re=energized me into become a twitter whore which YAY because i missed twitter ;)

as for the whole "he's not daniel" thing, the funny thing is that daniel would call out shit on people, maybe more eloquently said but hey, that's what SCRIPTS are for. i think he brought himself into daniel's character and we saw some shanks in jackson. especially towards the end of the show there was definitely more shanks in jackson's dialogue than before hehe and i loved that!

Michael is brutally honest and blunt. It's one of the things I like most about him.

I would not want him to change one thing, why? I am thoroughly enjoying having him on Twitter and actually being himself, I expected nothing else.

We don't get honesty enough these days...

Especially when it comes to a lot of actors/actresses on Twitter. They are too safe sometimes... they don't interact enough with their followers. They are just there to make cheesy, feel good posts, and on occasion have 'alotted Q/A time' with fans. It's not personable at all. Michael, on the other hand, is VERY personable. And his tweeting has only endeared him to me more.
